1951 January 8 – ART NEWS

WALTER PHILIPP (Milch; Jan. 8-27), former clown (his father and grandfather were also clowns) and waiter, after a surprising success with paintings of clowns and the theater has recently broadened his subject matter and refined his technique. The open spaces of the theater and the nostalgia of Memories of Paris, in which gay objects and figures are caught by fine, airy, white lines, and the simple restful After the Shows, exemplify this self-taught artist’s reflective sentimentality. $250-$600. R.G.

Signed by Walter Philipp – December 3rd, 1960
